CHAPTER

11

–Natalie–

MY HAND SHOOK as I gripped my full coffee mug. I stared around the small living room, thinking how much bigger it seemed this morning. I was used to Hunter being there. His shoes under the coffee table. His jacket slung over the kitchen stool. His presence had filled up my home. But this morning, it was only me and last night’s argument.

I was still unsure as to what I was going to do. I understood Hunter’s distress, and even his anger. Jasper’s getting out of jail made it feel as if his brother had no justice. But the things he had said to me—they weren’t the flippant rantings of a hurting man.

I decided the only way I was going to get some answers was to speak to Hunter directly. I fished my phone from my purse and called him. After several rings, it went to voicemail. I closed my eyes in frustration.

“Hey, Hunter, it’s Natalie. If you can give me a call when you get this, I’d really like to talk.” I went to hang up but changed my mind at the last second and put the phone back to my ear. “I know how hard all this must be for you. But I’m here for you. Whatever you need.”

After I hung up, I felt restless. I needed to fix this. As much as his words had stung last night, I was trying to be understanding. I knew I didn’t deserve what he had said, but he was in pain. It was easier to forgive when you remembered what his family had been through.

After showering and dressing, I decided to take the bull by the horns and head over to his house. If he wouldn’t talk to me on the phone, then he’d have to speak to me face to face. I gave Jamie a quick call to tell her I wasn’t coming in today. I felt guilty at how many times I had been leaving Jamie to manage the store recently, but I couldn’t worry about that now. I grabbed my purse and left before I changed my mind.

The drive was short, and the nerves had kicked in by the time I arrived at the Caruthers’ home. Hunter and I never argued much. I was generally laid back, and he usually got his way because of that. I had been raised on the old adage Great marriages don’t happen by accident, but are small daily acts of intentionality. I knew I had to put in the work to make Hunter happy, and in the past I had taken that job seriously. Now I was wondering if I had simply been wasting my time.

I knocked on the Caruthers’ door and waited. When no one answered the door, I knocked again. I pulled out my phone and dialed Hunter’s number in the hopes that he would pick up this time. But then I heard the distinctive ring of his phone coming from inside shortly before it cut to voicemail again. It was official: he was avoiding me.
